You CAN Survive Prostate Cancer

Yes indeed, YOU CAN SURVIVE Prostate Cancer. Take your time in reading this piece completely and you will learn a thing or two that WILL SURELY help you survive this condition.

So… how to survive prostate cancer? Before we go into that, let’s first take a closer look at Prostate Cancer…

Prostate cancer can be called a disease by which the cancer develops within the prostate (which is a gland that is located in the reproductive system of the male). It usually occurs when the prostate cells mutate into several numbers and multiply, mostly out of control. These prostate cells can spread (mestastasize) away from the prostate to even other parts of the person’s body, particularly the lymph nodes and the bones.

No doubts about it, prostate cancer is no joke and should be handled with all seriousness. It may cause a lot of pain for the victim, especially when the victim is urinating. Most times the victim also has problems with sexual intercourse. Some victims have reported erectile dysfunction as other problems that come with prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is mostly discovered by Prostate Specific Antigen screening (PSA for short). Although not commonly but it is also discovered by physical examination or other symptoms.

Prostate Cancer Is No Longer A Killer Disease If…

Here’s a good news about Prostate Cancer… no matter what everyone else tells you, it’s not so much of a killer disease as it used to be. Many people have survived prostate cancer and you can too. What’s most important about prostate cancer is for it to be detected in good time. When it’s detected in good time, your chances of surviving it are very high. That’s why it’s highly recommended that you ensure you always check out whether you have prostate cancer or not, instead of waiting for it to get too late. Yes, early detection helps a great deal.

But even if your prostate cancer isn’t detected in good time that doesn’t mean it’s the end of the road for you. There are cases of people who discovered their condition when it had advanced and they still survived it. If such people could survive prostate cancer, you CAN survive it too. That’s the first and most important thing you have to keep at the back of your mind. Never give up. No matter what anyone tells you, especially the doctors. You should always believe you CAN survive it and go on to look for ways to survive it. As they say – when there’s a WILL, there’s a WAY! This also applies very strongly to prostate cancer and its survival!

Popular Survivors Of Prostate Cancer

Like we have said, there have been many survivors of prostate cancer. But am sure this might be difficult for some people to believe because they don’t know who these survivors are. If you are one of such people who don’t want to believe that because they don’t know who the survivors are, keep reading. Below we provide you with names of some popular survivors of prostate cancer. You will definitely know one or all of them.

Robert De Niro

Even if you are not a movie fan, you definitely have heard of Robert De Niro. He is one of the popular survivors of this condition. He was diagnosed with this cancer in 2003. He didn’t come up publicly about this but it’s said that he survived it after undergoing a prostatectomy. So, you see? If he could survive this, you CAN survive it as well!

Nelson Mandela

Even if you are not an African or a fan of Africans, you must have surely heard of Nelson Mandela of South Africa who spent the best part of his 27 years in prison yet came out and became the president of South Africa.

He was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2001 but survived it. The treatment he had for the condition was radiation therapy. And as you know he’s still alive and strong at almost 100 years as of today (he’s 93 years old, as at the time of writing this). Again, if he could survive this cancer, YOU CAN survive it as well. And why not?!

Joe Toree

Whether you are a fan of sports or not, you may have heard of Joe Toree. He was the former celebrated manager of the New York Yankees. He was diagnosed with this condition in 1999. He survived it after undergoing prostatectomy prostate cancer treatment. We have said it before but it’s worth repeating – if he could survive it, YOU CAN survive it as well!

Rudy Giuliani

The popular former Mayor or New York is also one of the survivors of prostate cancer. He was diagnosed with the condition in 2000 and is still alive and strong as at the time of writing this. Again – if he could survive, why can’t you survive it too?

Colin Powell

For the African Americans, Colin Powell’s diagnoses and survival should show that this condition is really not as much a killer disease as everyone else seems to be saying. Lots of African Americans that get diagnosed have survived and are living strong, healthy and long.

Colon Powell was the first African American ever to have served as Chief of Staff. He later became the Secretary of State under George W. Bush’s presidency. He underwent surgery in 2003 for prostate cancer and is alive and well today.  We have said this now almost a million times on this website, but it’s worth repeating – if he could survive, YOU CAN survive this condition as well.

Les Brown

An African American also, Les Brown is one of the most popular motivational speakers in the United States. He is one of those that can be said to have gone through every single ups and downs you can imagine in life. Born and abandoned, he was adopted very early in life with his twin brother and went through extreme poverty while growing up. He survived it all and even survived a frustrating educational life where he was labelled as “educably mentally retarded”. He went on to become not only a popular DJ but also a member of the house of representatives.

After becoming a motivational speaker, his woes didn’t end there. He got a visit from prostate cancer and was told by his doctor after diagnosis that he had just a few years to live. He didn’t give up, of course. He fought with everything within him and was able to survive it. Again – if he could survive it, YOU CAN as well. He not only survived it, he has also helped lots of other people to survive this condition, including his close friends.

We can go on and on but the list is practically endless. There are so many popular celebrities who have survived this cancer as well as millions of unknown people. More people continue to survive it almost every single day. If they can survive, YOU CAN survive it as well.

How To Be One Of These Prostate Cancer Survivors

Early Detection Is Key

If you haven’t already been diagnosed with this condition, then the first and most important thing is to ensure it’s detected in good time. That means you should make it a habit of always going for yearly (or even twice yearly) tests from the age of 50. If you are African American or of African heritage, it’s recommended to start going for the tests as early as 40 or 45 years.

Even though there are debates lately that seem to say early tests are not necessary, we strongly think they are. Many survivors were able to survive the condition because their cancers were detected in good time. So, we strongly feel early detection is very important in helping you survive this cancer.

It’s also important to find out whether your dad, grand-dad, uncles, or other relatives have ever had the condition. As you may have heard, ones chances of contracting this condition are higher if one or more of his family members ever had it. If you fall into such  situations, then it’s much more important to start being vigilant by going for the tests constantly and earlier.

You MUST be WILLING to survive

If you have been diagnosed with this condition already, all hopes are not lost…

We have also said this so many times on this website, but it’s worth repeating it – the single most important determinant to surviving this condition is to be WILLING to fight and survive! That’s critically important. In as much as the treatments can help, YOU own yourself a duty to be WILLING to fight.

You might think this is not important, but think again – many people lose the battle against prostate cancer because they give up too soon. They feel death is just around the corner because they have been diagnosed with the condition. Many doctors make the situation worse by giving victims a limited prognosis. But we have to tell you that others have also been given such prognosis but they survived it.

So, you should, first and foremost, be WILLING to fight and win against this cancer. When you have this WILL and DETERMINATION, you will set yourself up to defeat this condition. As they say – when there’s a WILL, there’s a WAY!
