Prostate cancer awareness month programs can help people to go for the two major prostate screenings yearly after 40 or 50 years of age, namely:

  • Digital Rectal Examination and
  • PSA tests, that is, blood test for measuring levels of Prostate-Specific Antigen

These prostate cancer awareness month programs are very necessary because it will encourage a lot of people to go for prostate cancer test.

Prostate cancer, like most cancers, is treatable if it is detected in good time… before it spreads to other parts of the body outside the prostate.

While explaining the importance of prostate cancer awareness month to a friend, he insisted he needed to know the exact cause of prostate cancer.

As I have said on countless occasions, prostate cancer researchers, doctors and experts don’t know the exact cause of prostate cancer. They have all however agreed that certain factors such as the age, family history, lifestyle, etc all contribute to prostate cancer.

One of the most important factors causing prostate cancer is hereditary. That is, from parents to children. If your father or brothers or uncles had prostate cancer, there is a greater chance of you developing it than someone whose father didn’t have prostate cancer.

So, your family history plays an important role in whether you will have prostate cancer or not. But note that even if your father does have prostate cancer, it is not compulsory that you must develop it too. There are definitely exceptional cases.

The importance of knowing whether your father has prostate cancer is not to live the rest of your life with lost hopes that you too will get it and there is nothing you can do about it, but to live your life trying to prevent the occurrence of the disease. There are now many ways of preventing cancer, so get educated on these ways… and get on with it.

Better still, knowing that your father, brothers or uncles had prostate cancer will put you at alert of the possibility that you could get it. This alertness could help you stay alive because you will always be going for the prostate cancer tests once a year or twice a year.

By doing this, you will be able to discover the prostate cancer immediately it shows itself, instead of staying many years not knowing it is inside you, until it would have become too late.

So, knowing your father, brothers or uncles had prostate cancer could turn out to be your saving grace… if you use this knowledge to your benefit.
