For the most part, the symptoms of a disease are meant to warn of the presence of the disease so that the right steps can be taken to deal with the disease ? that is why they are called ‘warning signs.’ However, prostate cancer cannot and should not be taken in that same light because that would be unreasonably putting oneself in danger.

Early stage prostate cancer lacks any symptoms ? at least none that are known at this time to specialists in research and treatment of this cancerous tumor. When the warning signs of this condition do appear, they are often in the nature of urinary and sex related problems. Frequent urination and increased urination at night are often the first indicators that present themselves. Soon they graduate to difficulty starting and maintaining a steady stream of urine, blood in the urine, and painful urination. All of these problems associated with urinary dysfunction occur as changes within the prostate gland directly affect the flow of urine from the bladder to the penis. The prostate gland surrounds the prostatic urethra, so that this is almost inevitable when the malignancy causes prostate enlargement.

The sex related problems are with respect to function and performance. The patient may experience difficulty achieving an erection, and also some painful ejaculation. Naturally, he may observe blood in his semen as well. This occurs because the vas deferens deposits seminal fluid into the prostatic urethra, and secretions from the prostate gland itself are included in semen content.

Although these symptoms don’t come early, they are generally the first that a patient will encounter. As a reaches more advanced stages of the disease, the cancer spreads to other parts of the body and causes additional symptoms. Bone pain is the most common; but leg weakness, and fecal and urinary incontinence have been known to be included. The bone pain results from bone metastasis of the cancer as the disease spreads and continues to grow. It appears mostly in the vertebrae, pelvis or ribs, but it has been known to spread to the proximal part of the femur and other bones. The incontinence and leg weakness result from prostate cancer in the spine compressing the spinal cord, causing the symptoms.

When it comes to prostate kind of cancer, the symptoms are bad news because they generally signify disease progression, not the just the presence of it. Treating prostate cancer with the intent to cure requires that the cancer is caught early, which means that a man cannot be waiting to see these symptoms before going in for diagnostics. The American Cancer Society actually urges that every man over 50 should go I for these screenings as often as once a year to improve the chances of early detection and thereby better cure rates.
