Prostate Cancer Prevention Recent – The Advancements So Far II

Still on the subject of preventing prostate cancer, it would appear as though green tea also has some protective value due to its polyphenol content. Polyphenols are generally phenolic compounds of plant pigments with beneficial effects in human diet as antioxidants that neutralize the harmful oxidation action of free radicals that damages body tissue and leads to heart disease, strokes and cancers. Superficially in a 2001 study, oral infusion of green tea polyphenols has been shown to inhibit the development, progression, and metastasis of prostate type of cancer in mouse models. Today, it is now a potential alternative therapy for the condition by natural compounds.

Following up on the 2001 study, another clinical trial carried out in 2006 on green tea derivatives demonstrated that there was indeed promise of prostate carcinoma prevention in patients that are at high risk for the disease, sealing the fact and becoming a precursor for further studies to establish exactly how this can be put to use in a therapeutic capacity.

Still on the subject of prostate cancer prevention, more recent research results were published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute to suggest that multivitamins taken up to seven times a week or more can increase the risks of contracting the disease by as much as twice the initial incidence. Although the study did not establish which exact vitamins may be the culprit in this matter, it is suspected that vitamins A and E, and beta-carotene may be the culprits. As such, it is advised that patients should never exceed daily dose stated on the label if at all they must.

That said, scientists believed that a healthy and well balanced diet, which is rich in fiber and low in processed food contents, should take up the most of every man’s daily nutrition, except otherwise suggested for medical or other reasons. In addition, a reduced intake of meat and an increased consumption of cauliflower, broccoli, or one of the other cruciferous vegetables are recommended because men who had these in their diet for even as little as once a week were as much as 40% less likely to develop prostate cancer than men who indulged in all the other foods. It’s because of the phytochemicals that are found in the cruciferous vegetables ? indole-3-carbinol and diindolylmethane ? which gives them antiandrogenic and immune modulating properties, obviously.

Other factors that appear to affect the incidence of prostate type of cancer in the United States include ejaculation frequency, the consumption of oils and fatty acids, and an inactive lifestyle. To that effect, recent studies have proven that a higher ejaculation frequency for a man in his twenties leaves him at greater risk, but the same in a man in his fifties reduces his risk for prostate cancer. Also, dietary and serum omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids, or PUFAs, increased prostate tumor growth, sped up its histopathological progression, and decreased survival rate in prostate malignant patients. Interestingly, it was found that omega-3 fatty acids, in the same situation, had the opposite effect on patients ? a beneficial one.

To that end, and amongst other things, the most recent advancements in prostate kind of cancer prevention have led to the belief that prostate cancer risk is decreased in a vegetarian diet. Throw in some good exercise, and you are in business for a good long and healthy life, free of the malignancy of the prostate.
