Developers have made a tube made from ‘magic metal’ to help provide relief for men suffering from benign prostate enlargement.

With this tube inserted via the prostate, men with this condition will get easy and improved urine flow. More so, with this “treatment” the need for medications and invasive surgery will be minimized.

This tiny metal tube can be used for about five days after before it is removed. The test for this metal tube is still ongoing but so far no symptoms have been recorded after 6 months. Details of this treatment for Benign Prostate Enlargement were published by Roger Dobson on the health section of the “Mail Online”.

Benign prostate enlargement is a common health problem that affects many men who are aging — 60 and above. It is a non cancerous condition makes the prostate gland to be enlarged. Men with the condition are likely to develop the following symptoms:

  • Difficulty to start urination
  • Frequent need to urinate
  • Difficult in passing out urine, and other symptoms that affects the quality of life of the person.

There are already some drugs developed to treat this condition. These drugs aim at blocking the effects of a hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which has been associated to cause this condition. Scientists have observed that with increase in age, the DHT level in the prostate will increase and possibly stimulate enlarged prostate.

Apart from the DHT blockers, other drugs that have been found to be effective in treating benign prostate enlargement are called alpha-blockers. This set of medication helps to relax the tissues of the enlarged prostate.

Although both Alpha – blockers and DHT blockers are known to be effective in treating benign prostate enlargement, they still cause side effects like dizziness, and headaches.

Aside from the above treatments, the application of surgical procedure known as   Trans Urethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP) can be carried out. The risk of urinary incontinence and sexual dysfunction are the side effects of this invasive option to completely remove the prostate.

With the use of the tiny metal tube, the side effects of the above treatments are avoided. “The tube can be placed into the urethra at the point where it is being squeezed by the prostate. This provides immediate relief by widening the urethra” reported the Mail Online.

Finally, an Israel-based company MediTate is the developer of this device that has been used in many ongoing trials in Israel and Italy.
