In the United States alone, it is said by some that well over eighteen percent of the masculine population has prostate cancer, and that is not counting only the aged and ageing, but the young as well. You may not have thought of it before, but all of a sudden you must be able to see that this is not a carcinoma that is in the habit of taking prisoners.

Of the same male population, it is said that in the year 2005, more than three percent died of the disease or of complications arising from it. This is scary, because the disease is one that is supposed to be able to affect you only when you have exceeded a certain age – say, 50 or 60 years – and one that is supposed to progress so slowly that you are more likely to die from other causes (hopefully natural ones) before the prostate carcinoma has the chance to take you.

Suddenly, you must realize that you cannot take chances with this disease anymore, wouldn’t you say, especially since you live in the United States, which has one of the highest incidences of the disease, by percentage, around the world. It is already a proven fact that prostate cancer is most common in North America, and in Eastern Europe, the highly developed nations of the West; and a lot less prevalent in South America, the Near East, Asia, and almost nonexistent in Africa, the underdeveloped world.

It kind of makes you wonder, even though there really isn’t a specific known cause of prostate cancer, if there isn’t something about being in a Western nation that causes the disease to have higher incidence there, doesn’t it? When you consider that being an African American man, you have a higher chance of contracting the condition, it makes you wonder also.

It is no strange thing then that wild theories not backed by any form of scientific evidence or data, have surfaced all over the place, placing the blame of prostate cancer on some environmental factor in these developed nations, and black folks being more susceptible because they do not have the natural immune system to combat the disease. This, in spite of the established fact of known risk factors that cause prostate cancer incidence – age, genetics, race, diet, lifestyle, and medications, not to mention a couple of smaller factors and such.

Because prostate cancer seldom develops before the age of 40, and because as many as two out of every three cases of prostate cancer in existence are of men that are over the age of sixty five, it is easy to surmise that it is a disease that is related to aging.

The result of this in the minds of several novices or laypeople in the field of medicine or of prostate cancers, is that they begin to relate a lot of the other symptoms and diseases that are associated with old age to prostate cancer as well, without proof. That is why today, there are people who think that prostate cancer could leave you in a vegetative state, but that is so not true. Not in symptoms or in treatment can you become vegetative if you had prostate cancer, except on some rare possibility that a clot or noodle ended up in your brain and during surgery the surgeon nicked a nerve. What are the chances of that? Sounds like a Spiderman movie, doesn’t it?
