The way forward was to find a way to isolate xanthohumol from the hops in very large quantity as was first suggested by the lead author Emily Colgage, “Nevertheless, xanthohumol can be isolated from hops in large quantities and be examined further for its use as a dietary supplement for the prevention of BPH or prostate cancer in humans…”

Thankfully this was further investigated and lead to a new research that investigated the effectiveness or otherwise of xanthohumol that was extracted from hops (about 2.5 to about 20 micromole doses) from the BPH-1 and PC3 cell lines which were as models for the BPH as well as the prostate cancer.

The results of this found by the Oregon State University researchers was that xanthohumol as well as it’s oxidation ingredient, xanthoaurenol, impressively reduced the number of cancerous cells in a dose dependent way. A further good result was that the hop extracts were also able to promote apoptosis (which is the programmed cell death).

But of course, all these were done in the laboratory cells, not yet on humans.

That’s why Josephine Querido, the science information officer with the Cancer Research UK cautioned that “Nevertheless, xanthohumol can be isolated from hops in large quantities and be examined further for its use as a dietary supplement for the prevention of BPH or prostate cancer in humans…”

But is that the final word on this? Not at all. Very adamant German scientists have gone ahead with the development of a beer (Xan) that specifically contains about 10 times the xanthohumol amount that is contained in normal brew.

Thankfully, this beer (Xan) is now being promoted and sold as a “healthy beer” that can help with the prevention of prostate cancer, even though research is still on to really ascertain whether it can help against cancer.

Want to buy this beer (xan)? It’s still only available in Germany and is far more expensive than other beers. To show how powerful this beer will be, it’s being carefully microbrewed by both the oldest brewery worldwide, the Weihenstephan brewery and the Technical University of Munich.

Another angle of this is for scientists to work on developing specific pills that will contain a high concentration doses of xanthohumol. Thankfully there are now already certain food supplements that are said to contain hops.
