The American Cancer Society (ACS) is the “nationwide community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy and service.” That’s what their statement says and that is what they do. The ACS has funded 42 Nobel Prize laureates including James D. Watson, Mario Capecchi, Oliver Smithies, Paul Berg, E. Donnall Thomas, and Walter Gilbert.

With respect to prostate cancer, there are various efforts that have been put in place and others that are being monitored and reported by the ACS. They include studies about causes, prevention, and treatment of prostate cancer. based on research. For instance, it has been determined that genes are involved in no little way, so that tests to find abnormal prostate cancer genes could help tell which men are at high risk and further research could provide answers about the chemical changes that lead to prostate cancer, and figuring out which cancers are more likely to spread may become easier. Currently, researchers are trying to find genetic clues that assert these, or at least provide information that will help.

For prevention, research has focused on foods that affect prostate cancer risk. Scientists have found that tomatoes, soybeans, pepper, and the saw palmetto have substances in them that may help to prevent prostate cancer, and they are working to develop related compounds even more powerful to be taken as supplements. In addition, a balanced diet that includes these foods and certain fruits and vegetables and some fish has been found to be the ultimate preventive diet for prostate cancer. Based on research, certain vitamins and minerals have been determined that could lower prostate cancer risk with a focus on selenium, vitamin E, and vitamin D. The results trickling in are far from conclusive, though.

Other prostate cancer research by this American Cancer Society (ACS) is focusing on early detection of the disease. Whilst the PSA and DRE tests have been used as standards in the past, doctors generally agree that they are not accurate, so that better screening tests are now a priority. In diagnosis, research has turned up a newer method, known as color Doppler ultrasound to make prostate biopsies more accurate by helping to ensure the right part of the gland is sampled.

Generally the problem with prostate cancer research, and well acknowledged by the American Cancer Society, is the fact that the process has to be done over a very long time, which is limiting. However it is necessary in order to achieve reliable results. Those who have been able to bring their works to fruition will testify that this is real. On the ACS website, you can link up with as many of them as you want, and learn about everything that they have to offer.
