Definition

Prostate cancer is the malignancy of the prostate gland; another definition places it as a disease in which cancer develops in the prostate, wherein the cells of the organ begin to mutate and multiply uncontrollably. Aggressive prostate type of cancer is the type of condition that is both difficult to detect (and therefore diagnose) and that is very resistant to treatment.

Detection

Detection of prostate cancer is difficult at best because of the absence of symptoms in the early stages of the disease; it is worse still for aggressive prostate form of cancer because this form is even more evasive. It is risky to await the symptoms of the disease because it may be too far gone. Most prostate cancers are adenocarcinomas which can be detected by a DRE (digital rectal examination) once the tumor starts to grow.

Aggressive prostate kinds of cancers are often small cell sarcomas, which do not cause a tumor too readily, and could progress very rapidly without even causing a spike in the PSA level of the patient. As such the best way to detect aggressive prostate cancer is through a biopsy of the prostate, which is awkward because it does not occur that often, and poking needles into the prostate all so often is? well, invasive. Prostate mapping may also help in its own way.

Treatment

Once it has been determined that a patient suffers from aggressive prostate cancer, the treatment of the condition should likewise be quick and aggressive. Most such prostate type of cancers will not respond to monotherapy, so that combine treatments may be the best option. Radiation therapy often helps, but the first option would be to slow down the progression of the disease. In that case, hormonal therapy would be the best option, unless the cancer is hormone refractory, which then would call for chemotherapy.

Prognosis

Prognosis is never good for aggressive prostate cancer, but a lot depends on how early the disease is detected and determined to be aggressive. This would call for the more aggressive treatments required to heal the patient. The chances are that this patient will not be living longer than three years if the cancer is not caught early enough. The specialists may provide palliation and extend his life, but only so much.
