Laparoscopic Surgery for Prostate Cancer

Also called Laparoscopic Prostate Surgery, Robot-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy (RALRP) is one of the major forms of treatment for prostate cancer. If the name sounds odd to you, don’t worry about it. What’s important is whether it can help you treat your prostate cancer.

Robot-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy (RALRP) is another method for removing the affected prostate. As the name implies, it involves the inserting of tube-kind of instruments, along with a long, slim tube that has a small camera on the end of it (laparoscope) into 5 small incisions in the abdomen. This helps to give the magnified view of the surgical area where the surgeon guides the instruments via the viewing device when carrying out the surgery.

Studies that have been carried out show that the traditional open prostatectomy and this Robot-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy (RALRP) have similar results when it comes to cancer-free rates of survival, urinary continence as well as sexual function after one year of surgery.
