One of the most effective methods that can be used to treat prostate cancer is the radiation therapy. This is the application of high intensive ray to destroy cancerous cells in the prostate. The best application of these rays is when the prostate cancer is still localized. This means, it is still concentrated within the tissues of the prostate gland.

There are different types of radiation therapies. Two of the most effective ones are discussed below:

Brachytherapy – This is a kind of prostate cancer radiation treatment in which small capsules or “seed” like structures with radioactive properties are implanted into the prostate gland to destroy the cancer or tumor that has been ravaging that part of the body. The seeds emit radioactive rays that kill and freeze the tumors.

Brachytherapy is often applied when the tumor is still in the early stages – stage 1 and stage 2. The number of seeds that could be implanted into the prostate during this procedure may range from 50 to 100 and their sizes are like that of rice seeds.

Brachytherapy may cause impotence and urinary incontinence as its side effects. More so, the procedure can be carried out as an out patient procedure. If the procedure is successful, the patient can be discharged same day.

External X-Ray Therapy ((XRT) – This is another type of radiation treatment for cancer that originates from the prostate gland. Unlike Brachytherapy, the XRT is often applied when the cancerous cells have metastasized or spread to other parts of the body. It is a known fact that when cancer of the prostate is in the advanced stage, it readily affects surrounding health tissues and could lead to more complications, as well a increase the risk of death for the person.

External X-ray therapy (XRT) is carried out when an instrument with that contains high energy X-rays is projected into the tissues to destroy the prostate gland. When the projections are applied on the cancerous tissues, healthy tissues are most often saved. The treatment tends to be selective on  the type of cells it destroys.

The side effects of this treatment could be impotency, diarrhea, frequent urination, and difficult in urination.

The above treatments are often applied as radiation treatments for prostate cancer. For more information on these, you can consult your doctor and read more from the Internet. For sure, there are many online resources that would be invaluable to you.
