Symptoms And Treatment Of Prostate Cancer

The warning signs of prostate cancer do not come early, and when they come they can be mistaken for a number of other diseases, such as other prostate disorders, infections, or inflammations. They may include frequent urination, increased urination at night, difficulty starting and maintaining a steady stream of urine, blood in the urine, and painful urination. The adenocarcinoma may also cause some significant problems with the sexual function and performance of the patient, notably difficulty achieving an erection and/or a painful sensation upon ejaculation.

And just when you think you may have had the worst of it, the onset of advanced prostate cancer may then come along with the most common symptom of bone pain, often in the vertebrae, which may then further spread to the pelvis and the ribs. Yet it is not over; other bones such as the femur can be affected by the metastasis, as can the bones of the feet and of the skull, usually in the proximal part of the bone. And finally, as a grand finale, prostate carcinoma in the spine may then compress your spinal cord, causing leg weakness and urinary and fecal incontinence, and possibly even paralysis ? not common, but definitely not impossible.

Most of these instances occur on the occasion that the disease was not treated early or when it is not treated effectively. However there are several instances also in which the form of prostate cancer that a patient is suffering from is the very aggressive type, the type that is not often even detected until it has metastasized extensively to various locations all over the body. Cancer of the prostate appears to have an affinity for the bones, so bone metastasis (and thereby bone pain) is a common occurrence.

Symptom treatment for prostate cancer is basically a wrong approach because that does not really address the disease itself. Taking pain relievers for instance, during the onset of the earlier symptoms will only cause the patient to be ignorantly oblivious to the pain as the cancer itself continues to spread. Even a transurethral resection of the prostate to cut away the excess tissue in an enlarged prostate does not pay due attention to the disease itself.

Treatment has to be decisive and definitive in order to tackle prostate cancer. A radical prostatectomy is advised for early stage disease, as also is radiation therapy. Hormonal treatment may slow or reverse disease progression, but once the cancer is out of the prostate, chemotherapy might be the best option. Now even though the treatments themselves may cause their own side effects, they are better off than looking only to the symptoms of prostate type of cancer and trying to solve those ones – it just doesn’t work that way.
