Hydrogen Peroxide and Prostate Cancer – Is there any truth to the claim?
Someone once claimed that he treated himself for prostate cancer once by using hydrogen peroxide, and that the disease was “stopped.” Specifically he said “?How I Stopped Prostate Cancer by Inhaling Hydrogen Peroxide Using a Nasal Spray Pump,” describing an intriguing process in which he shunned chemotherapy and stayed on hydrogen peroxide inhalations every day for the past five years since he was diagnosed, and the disease has not progressed till date.
It is interesting to think that that might be true and have evaded all the experts that have been in the study, research and clinical trials concerning this disease for the past? for ages. Not impossible, but intriguing. So could it really be true? Could hydrogen peroxide be that miracle prostate cancer cure that has eluded mankind for all this time? Well, let’s look at a few of these facts the way that they are recorded.
Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is generally a very pale blue liquid, slightly more viscous than water, which appears colorless in dilute solution. It is a weak acid, has strong oxidizing properties, and a powerful bleaching agent. It is used as a disinfectant, antiseptic, oxidizer, and in rocketry as a propellant. Hydrogen peroxide is generally recognized and used as an antiseptic and anti-bacterial agent because of its oxidizing effect. Like many oxidative antiseptics, it is effective at rapidly stopping capillary bleeding, and is sometimes used sparingly for this purpose, as well as cleaning.
But what about prostate cancer?
Well, quite straightly, the American Cancer Society states that “there is no scientific evidence that hydrogen peroxide is a safe, effective or useful cancer treatment”, and urges that all cancer patients should stick to the treatments recommended by their doctors. According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), there are a lot of standard therapies for cancers, and proven methods of treatment and approved clinical trials of promising new treatments. Patients should learn to be patient (forgive the PUN there). The inhalation of hydrogen peroxide at a concentration of about 1% is one controversial alternative medical procedure that has been frowned upon by people in the medical community. For one, such internal use of high concentration H202 has a history of causing fatal blood disorders, and several deaths have been linked to its recent use as a therapeutic treatment.
So is there any truth to the claimant’s claim that there is a link between prostate cancer and H2O2?
Well, there might be; it’s just that there is no medical evidence to corroborate his story. The man did say that he self medicated on the substance because according to him, ‘viruses cannot survive in an oxygen rich environment,’ but prostate cancer is not as much a virus as it is a malignancy. The said remission of the carcinoma may then well be a spontaneous one. In any case he did add that he was over eighty years old, a time when early stage prostate cancer may not cause any outward symptoms before other ailments associated with old age take you.
The best thing to do would be to wait for the outcomes of the doctors’ and researchers’ clinical trials.
